Possibly from Vulgar Latin *tastāre, from taxitāre, diminutive of Late Latin taxāre, present active infinitive of taxō, from Classical Latin tangō (“I touch”). Compare Venetian tastar, Italian tastare, Catalan and Occitan tastar, Old French taster, Sicilian tastari.
