From Old High German tiuf, from Proto-Germanic *deupaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewb- (deep). Cognate with German tief, Dutch diep, Saterland Frisian djoop, English deep, Icelandic djúpur, Swedish djup. From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Ancient Greek βυθός (buthós, depth), Latvian dobs (hollow), Old Church Slavonic дъбрь (dŭbrĭ, valley), Irish domhan (earth, world), Welsh dŵr (water).
