From Old High German tiuf, from Proto-Germanic *deupaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewb- (“deep”). Cognate with German tief, Dutch diep, Saterland Frisian djoop, English deep, Icelandic djúpur, Swedish djup. From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Ancient Greek βυθός (buthós, “depth”), Latvian dobs (“hollow”), Old Church Slavonic дъбрь (dŭbrĭ, “valley”), Irish domhan (“earth, world”), Welsh dŵr (“water”).
