Etymology

Borrowed from Anglo-Norman topace, from the Ancient Greek proper noun Τοπάζιος (Topázios), ancient name of St. John's Island, Egypt, in the Red Sea, believed to be the first discovered source of the mineral τοπάζιον (topázion, peridot).
