From Latin turdus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *trozdo, *trosdos. The initial 's' may be due to influence by Latin sturnus, and the final 'z' may be due to the word being reformed from the plural (turdi), or less likely through a root *turdeus. Compare Aromanian sturdzu, strudz.
