Etymology

Possibly ultimately from Byzantine Greek στέριφος (stériphos). Alternatively, it may be derived from a Vulgar Latin root *exstirpus or *extirpus. Compare Aromanian sterpu. Compare Albanian shterp, shterpë, probably from the same source, and Venetian sterpa, Friulian sterpe.
