From Proto-Germanic *stōraz, whence also Old English stōr, Old Saxon stōri. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *stā-r-, Proto-Indo-European *steh₂-ro-. Compare Pashto ستر (stër) ("large"), Lithuanian stóras, Old Church Slavonic старъ (starŭ) ("old"), Russian старый (stáryj) ("old").
