From Vulgar Latin *expanticō (“I burst”) (compare Daco-Romanian spinteca, spintec, Venetian spantegar (“to bust; scatter, sprinkle”), Calabrian spantecare ("to open")), from Latin pantices (“bowels”), plural of pantex; cf. pãnticã.
