From older spînz, from *spîndzu (compare Aromanian spingiu), from Latin spongia (sponge); metaphorically applied to horse diseases, as in Spanish espundia (skin ulcer (in horses)), Sardinian spòngia, ispunzòla (wobbler syndrome); ultimately from Ancient Greek σπογγιά (spongiá). Cf. also Albanian spëndër.
