Etymology
From Medieval Latin, Vulgar Latin *exēligere, present active infinitive of *exēligō, from Latin ex (“out of, from”) + ēligō (“I pick out, choose, elect”). Compare Italian scegliere, Venetian sèlier, sièlder, Sicilian scègghiri, scègliri. Cf. also French élire and (obsolete) Spanish esleír.
