shishamo

English

Etymology

Borrowed from Japanese 柳葉魚 (ししゃも, shishamo, literally willow leaf fish) (kanji are ateji, or rather jukujikun), from Ainu スサㇺ (susam), presumably from スス (susu, willow) + ハㇺ (ham, leaf). “Willow leaf” is due to the fish’s slender shape, similar to the shape of a willow leaf.

Noun

shishamo (plural shishamo)

  1. Spirinchus lanceolatus, a Japanese smelt.
