shishamo
English
Etymology
Borrowed from Japanese 柳葉魚 (ししゃも, shishamo, literally “willow leaf fish”) (kanji are ateji, or rather jukujikun), from Ainu スサㇺ (susam), presumably from スス (susu, “willow”) + ハㇺ (ham, “leaf”). “Willow leaf” is due to the fish’s slender shape, similar to the shape of a willow leaf.
Noun
shishamo (plural shishamo)
