Etymology

From Middle High German schrīben, from Old High German scrīban, from Proto-Germanic *skrībaną, a late borrowing from Latin scrībō (write), which comes from a word meaning "to scribe, to scrape". Compare Low German schrieven, Dutch schrijven, English shrive and scribe, West Frisian skriuwe, Danish skrive, Swedish skriva, Icelandic skrifa.
