Etymology

From French sylphide, from New Latin sylphes, coined by Swiss occultist Paracelsus in the 16th century. The coinage may derive from Latin sylvestris (“of the woods”) and nympha (“nymph”), or otherwise Ancient Greek σίλφη (sílphē, “beetle”).
