From Middle English rudnen, equivalent to rud (“to become red; redden”) + -en. Possibly merged with Old Norse roðna (“to become red; redden”) (whence Old Danish rodne, Swedish rodna (“to redden”)). Compare also Danish rødme (“to blush”).
