From Latin arānea (“spider's web”), later coming to refer to skin diseases such as herpes, scabies, impetigo, etc. Compare Aromanian arãnji, rãnji. Compare also Italian rogna, French rogne, Portuguese ronha, and Spanish roña, which came from a root *aronea or *ronea that was probably influenced by rodere.
