postal code
English
Noun
postal code (plural postal codes)
- A sequence of letters and/or numbers added to a postal address to aid the sorting and delivery of post/mail.
- Don't forget to add the postal code to the envelope, or it won't be delivered on time.
Usage notes
- This seems to be used as a generic term to include any of the official codes established by postal services intended to facilitate mail delivery.
- Within a country many speakers may use the name of the national postal code (such as "zip code" or "postcode") to refer to any such code, even if it is the postal code of a foreign postal service.
