Etymology

A derivative of përball 'to face, to defy', ultimately from ballë 'forehead'. Structurally and semantically comparable with Germanic *balþaz 'to be bold' (cf. Old Norse ballr (“hard, stubborn”)), a derivative of PIE *bʰelH 'white, shining'.
