From Middle French, from Old French orgoill (“pride”), from Frankish *urgōl (“pride”), from Proto-Germanic *uzgōljō (“pride”). Cognate with Old High German urguol (“outstanding, distinguished”), Old Saxon urgôl (“outstanding, distinguished”), Old English orgel, orgello (“pride”). Compare Italian orgoglio, Spanish orgullo, Catalan orgull.
