nijeste

Serbo-Croatian

Alternative forms

  • (Standard Bosnian, Standard Croatian, Standard Serbian) níste
  • (regional, chiefly Serbia) néste

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *ne + *este, second-person plural present tense form of *byti. This formation later created *ne jesmъ in the South Slavic vernaculars, which merged to become něste (attested in the 14th century). Because of the yat reflex, něste became rendered as nijeste in Ijekavian speeches.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /nijěːste/, /nijěste/
  • Hyphenation: ni‧je‧ste

Verb

nijéste, nijèste (Cyrillic spelling није́сте, нијѐсте)

  1. (historical, literary) negative second-person plural present tense form of biti.
