From Proto-Nahuan *naːwɨ, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *na-wakay. Compare Classical Nahuatl nāhui (“four”). Cognate with Yaqui naiki (“four”), Hopi naalöyö' (“four”), and Central Tarahumara nawosa (“four”).
