From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɗəp ~ *ɗəəp ~ *ɗap ~ *ɗaap (“to cover”); cognate with Bahnar đơ̆p (“to cover with lid”), Khasi kdup (“to cover, defend, protect”), Khmer ក្ដោប (kdaop, “to stop up”) and ទប់ (tup, “to cover”). See also núp, nấp, nép, đắp.
