Probably from Late Latin mustaceus, Vulgar Latin *mustaceus, from Ancient Greek μύσταξ (mústax, “upper lip”). Compare Aromanian mustatsã, French moustache, Italian mostaccio, Neapolitan mustaccio, Romanian mustață, Spanish mostacho.
