Probably from lengthened and diathematic e-grade form Proto-Albanian *mel-i-t-yo, from Proto-Indo-European *mel 'to hesitate; bad, wrong, false'. Compare Greek μόλις (mólis, “with difficulty”), Old Irish mall (“be late”).
