From German Mastzelle f, "feeding cell," coined in 1878 by immunologist Paul Ehrlich; "Mast" + Ancient Greek κύτος (kútos, “cell”). Not a cognate with the Ancient Greek root μαστός (mastós, “(human) breast”).
