Most probably substrate with Romanian măgar id. Alternatively from *margar, from *margë, from Gothic *𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌷𐍃 (*marhs, “horse”), from Proto-Germanic *marhaz, from Proto-Indo-European *márkos (“horse”) even though the existence of this root is controversial.
