From Proto-Vietic *ɓuh, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɓuh ~ *ɓuuh (“to bubble, boil”); cognate with Khmer ពុះ (puh, “to boil”). Other cognates through affixed form are Khmer ពពុះ (pɔpuh, “foam”), Semai buboh (“foam”) and Mon ဗၜိုဟ် (həbɒh, “foam”).
