From Latin metallum (“metal, mine, quarry, mineral”), from Ancient Greek [Term?] (“mine, quarry, metal”), from μεταλλεύω (metalleúō, “to mine, quarry”), of unknown origin, but apparently related to μεταλλάω (metalláō, “to seek after”), also of unknown origin.
