Etymology

Originates from the titles of certain Something Awful forum threads. Initially, Let's Plays were done in a screenshot format on the Something Awful forums, but after Something Awful users slowbeef, Proton Jon and DeceasedCrab took to YouTube to post Let's Plays, Let's Play swiftly became popular and developed there (on YouTube) in a video format. Other non-video Let's Plays still exist (especially on the Something Awful forums), but the video format has come to overshadow the original screenshot format due to its stark popularity.

1. (Internet, video games) A format of playing video games (conducted through screenshots with commentary under them, subtitles on videos, videos with voice commentary etc.) in which the creator plays a video game while commenting on the gameplay.
