lapsus (“lap”) +‎ auris (“ear”)

Lapsus auris is the technical term used for the so-called "lapse of the ear" (a common term in certain states in the USA, particularly Wisconsin and Texas). The term originally referred to the simple mishearing of a word on the sufferer's part, but has now come to refer to the tendency to mishear things which are relevant to one's own thoughts, much like the commonly used "Freudian slip". The term is first encountered in the works of Nicander of Colophon (2nd C. BC), particularly in his Epigrams.
