From Middle High German lernen, from Old High German lernēn, lirnēn, from Proto-Germanic *liznaną, from *lizaną (to know, understand), from Proto-Indo-European *leys- (to trace, track). Cognate with German lernen, English learn, Dutch leren, Luxembourgish léieren. Non-Germanic cognates include Kashubian lécha (garden patch), Latin līra (the earth thrown up between two furrows; a ridge).
