Etymology
From Middle High German lernen, from Old High German lernēn, lirnēn, from Proto-Germanic *liznaną, from *lizaną (“to know, understand”), from Proto-Indo-European *leys- (“to trace, track”). Cognate with German lernen, English learn, Dutch leren, Luxembourgish léieren. Non-Germanic cognates include Kashubian lécha (“garden patch”), Latin līra (“the earth thrown up between two furrows; a ridge”).
