Albanian

Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ker-d 'short mountain', from *(s)ker- (short), in which case it would be close to Old Persian (H)ara-kadriš (, mountain ravine), Welsh cader (fortress), Old Irish cathir (town, city), Umbrian kateramu (congregation), Bulgarian котор (kotor, hurdle). Alternatively, it could represent a borrowing from Latin quadrum, also reflected in Romanian codru, Aromanian coduru.
