From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kirsnos, from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (“black”). Cognates include Lithuanian kir̃snas (“black”), Old Church Slavonic чрънъ (črŭnŭ, “black”) and Sanskrit कृष्ण (kṛṣṇá, “black”).
