From archaic kíjó, with the diminutive suffix + -ó from Proto-Ugric *kiyə, from Proto-Uralic *küje or *küji (“snake”). Cognate with Finnish kyy (“viper”), Moksha куй (kuj, “snake”) and Udmurt кый (kyj, “snake”).
