iota subscript (plural iotas subscript)

  1. (Greek grammar) A small iota written below an alpha or omega, representing a vocalic offglide that was pronounced in early Greek, but later became silent. The iota subscript was invented in the Middle Ages in order to mark those vowels which would originally have had such an offglide.
