Etymology

From Middle English inwonen, from Old English *inwunian (“to dwell in, inhabit”), suggested by Old English inwunung (“residence, habitation, dwelling”), from Proto-Germanic *in (“in-”), *wunōną, *wunjaną (“to dwell, remain”), equivalent to in- +‎ wone. Cognate with Dutch inwonen (“to live in”), German einwohnen (“to reside”). More at in-, wone.
