Etymology

Latin hypocaustum, from Ancient Greek ὑπό (hupó, “underneath”) + καίειν (kaíein, “to light a fire, burn”)

  1. An underfloor space or flue through which heat from a furnace passes to heat the floor of a room or a bath.
