hygroma (plural hygromas or hygromata)

  1. a discrete, fluid-filled sac that can form on the joints of dogs or other animals in response to repeated pressure.
    • 1916, United States Department of Agriculture, Special Report on Diseases of the Horse‎:
      When the hemorrhage is limited the symptoms may not become noticeable; if it is near the surface of the body a round or diffuse swelling or tumor may form, constituting a hygroma.
    • 1906, Harry Caulton Reeks, Diseases of the Horse's Foot‎:
      Examples of such a condition are to be found in bog-spavin, in hygroma of the stifle, and sometimes in the fetlock.
