From Middle English hegtide, from Old English hēahtīd (“a holy day”), equivalent to high + tide. Cognate with Dutch hoogtijd, German Hochzeit, Danish højtid, Swedish högtid, Icelandic hátíð, Norwegian Bokmål høytid, Norwegian Nynorsk høgtid. Compare also highday, hockday.
