First coined in French as hydrogène by Lavoisier and his team, from Ancient Greek ὑδρο- (hudro-, “water”), from ὕδωρ (húdōr, “water”) + -γενής (-genḗs, “producer of”), from γεννάω (gennáō, “I bring forth”). Surface analysis: hidro- + -geno.
