gyda
See also: Gyða
Welsh
Alternative forms
- gydag (used before vowels)
- 'da, 'dag (abbreviated form)
Etymology
cyd (“joint, united”) + â (“with”), mutated as it comes at the head of an adverbial phrase
Pronunciation
- (North Wales) IPA(key): /ˈɡɨ̞da/
- (South Wales) IPA(key): /ˈɡɪda/, /ˈɡəda/
Preposition
gyda
Usage notes
Gyda traditionally triggers the aspirate mutation, but in speech this may be absent. Before a word beginning with a vowel, gydag is used instead, except in some colloquial versions of the language where it remains gyda.
