From gutui (“quince tree”), or less likely a Vulgar Latin root cotōnea, taken as a feminine singular from the plural of Latin cotōneum, ultimately from Ancient Greek κυδώνιον (kudṓnion). Compare Italian cotogna, Sicilian cutugna; compare Latin māla cotōnea < mālum cotōneum.
