From Old Portuguese golpella, from Vulgar Latin *vulpicla, contraction of Latin vulpēcula (“fox kit”), diminutive of vulpēs (“fox”), from earlier volpēs, from Proto-Italic *wolpi, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p ~ *h₂ulp (“(red) fox”). Cognate with Spanish vulpeja, Asturian vulpeya, Occitan volpìlh, Middle French goupil, Old Italian volpiglio.
