From Middle Dutch gevadere, ghevadere, from Old Dutch *gefadero, from Proto-Germanic *gafaderô, from *ga- (“co-”) + *fadērô (“uncle”); comparable to ge- + vader. Cognate with Low German Gevadder, Gevader (< Old Saxon *gifadero), Old English ġefædera, Old High German gifatero.
