From Middle High German gel, the final b from the w in the inflected forms (gelwer, gelwes), derived from Old High German gelo, itself from Proto-Germanic *gelwaz. The older spellings gel and gehl survive in set phrases like Safran macht den Kuchen gel. Cognate to English yellow, Dutch geel.
