Etymology

Uncertain. Either from Slavic glutu, (compare Slovene golt), or more likely from Latin guttura, which may have resulted in a plural form *gâturi, reduced to gât as a singular form through analogy. Compare French goitre. It is also possible that it may derive from the Latin singular form, guttur, itself. The presence of the â indicates a probable Slavic influence on the word. Compare guturai, which preserved the original u.
