From Arabic فُول مُدَمَس‎ (fūl mudamas). The first part is فُول‎ (fūl, “fava bean”); the second may be a Coptic word meaning “buried”, from Coptic ⲧⲱⲙⲥ (tōms, “to bury”), Fayyumic variant ⲧⲁⲙⲉⲥ (tames).
