Audio (file) - Hyphenation: fraŭ‧lo
Noun
fraŭlo (accusative singular fraŭlon, plural fraŭloj, accusative plural fraŭlojn)
- bachelor (unmarried man)
- 1932, L. L. Zamenhof (tr.), “Nokta ĉapo de fraŭlo”, in Fabeloj (in Esperanto), translation of Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen:
- Oni mokas maljunan fraŭlon.
- People mock an old bachelor.
- Oni mokas maljunan fraŭlon.
-
- (uncommon, often capitalized) title for an unmarried male, coordinate to Miss (honorific)
Usage notes
Unlike Sinjoro (“Mister”), Sinjorino (“Madam, Mistress”) and Fraŭlino (“Miss”), Fraŭlo is not commonly used as courtesy title. Not quite equivalent to English "Master", as that is age-based rather than marriage-based.
