From Middle English forteen, from Old English fortēon (“to mislead, seduce; draw over, cover, obscure”), equivalent to for- + tee. Cognate with West Frisian fortsjen (“to move out, depart”), German verziehen (“to warp, stretch, spoil, move away”).
