From earlier fenoll, from Old Occitan (compare Occitan fenolh), from Vulgar Latin *fenuclum, syncopated form of Late Latin fēnuculum (compare French fenouil, Spanish hinojo), from Latin fēniculum, diminutive of fēnum (“herb”).
