From Middle Irish fogamur (“harvest”), from Old Irish fogamar, fogomur, from Proto-Celtic *uɸo-giamur (“under winter”), from *uɸo- (“under”) + *giamur (“winter”). Akin to geimhreadh. Cognate with Welsh cynauaf. Compare Scottish Gaelic foghar, Manx fouyr.
