extension field

English

Noun

extension field (plural extension fields)

  1. (field theory) A field which contains another field — its "base field" — as its subfield; the extension field is obtained from its base field by adjoining certain elements to it; these extra elements may be considered to have the effect of making the extension field behave as if it were a vector space of finite dimension over the base field.
